First Transformation: 1608, Jamestown
The first time that Marlene becomes unbalanced, it is an overall excruciating process, as her energy began to dramatically shift. On the 10th anniversary of her parents' death, Marlene is kidnapped and nearly beaten to death by two slave traders. Left bloody in the woods, Marlene is able to sap enough energy from the surrounding Earth to make it back to town. Once there, she finds the two men drinking outside a pub. She uses Alchemy to suck their life energy from their bodies, killing them. This act is one of the great taboos of Alchemy, and her body, unable to handle the dark mark of the deed that she had done, begins to dramatically alter her so she is unbalanced, and dark. It is after her transformation that she adopts the name Adrasdos Dark, from the Greek "Adrastus", the King of Argos well-known for being able to survive against the odds. His name is also synonymous with "inescapable". Adra remained unbalanced until 1644, when Cain forced her to return to Gaia, where the Jämvikt military subjected her to energetic rehabilitation.
During this time, Adra only kills one man- someone who was abusing his child. Most of her time is devoted to learning different forms of Alchemy.
Second Transformation: 1815, England
A few weeks after Cain announced that he wants to divorce Adra, she gives birth to her first child brought to full term- her son, Adrian Romanić. The grief that she experiences following the death of her son sends her into a spiraling depression, and eventually she begins to experience "blackouts" where she is unbalanced. Eventually, she does not recover from one of the blackouts, and she becomes permanently unbalanced again. It is during this time that she begins to go on killing sprees, unlike her first period of being unbalanced. Most of the time, she just murders people in cold blood- she wears a mask to hide her identity and kills murderers, rapists, and slave traders. She quickly becomes known in the press as the "Black Angel of London". She is turned in to the leader of the English Sanctuary in 1825, and is imprisoned. She became balanced in 1837 whilst in her 17th year of her 20-year sentence, after a young pregnant nurse succumbs to wounds to that another inmate inflicted upon her.
Third Transformation: Gaia, 1899
Following the Third Great Alchemist War and fall of the Jämvikt Republic, the authoritarian Mörkan government passes the Unwarden Acts, which require citizens to pass on any information regarding the whereabouts of Jämvikt military leaders from the War. It is during the nest two years that most of the Jämvikt resistance leaders and wartime generals are executed. Adra is turned in by Hydra in 1896, but is spared from the ethnic cleansing of the Raijis Alchemists, as well as execution due to her ability to go from balanced to unbalanced states. In an effort to understand Adra's energetic state, Mörkan rulers order experiments to be conducted on her- one of which permanently stains her irises ice blue. One experiment eventually pushes her back into an unbalanced state, and she escapes from her prison one week later, leaving a massacre behind her.
This third unbalanced period is marked by her perfection of the use of poison to kill her victims, as well as an interest in cannibalism. She turns away from the vigilante killing that she was accustomed to during her last unbalanced period, instead murdering innocent people on her own whims. She meets Orion in 1902, and they are lovers until 1919. In 1921, Adra becomes balanced again during the Roaring 20's, when she is nearly killed by an inebriated driver in a car accident.
Fourth Transformation: Blogland, 2014
Following the birth of her daughter, Cara, Adra entered postpartum depression. This depression made her relive the events of eight years prior, when she was a slave in Italy. She experienced "black outs", similar to the second time that she became unbalanced. Due to a combination of her constant attempts to remain balanced, along with the help with her romantic interest Alastair Cruciatus, Adra soon succumbed to her unbalanced state. During this time, Adra is perhaps at the most ruthless and murderous of her unbalanced periods, as she kills tenfold as many people as she did in the previous three sequences combined. Most of this is due to her aid in the destruction of Gaia, which resulted in a loss of billions of people. She remained as such until May of 2015, when she trapped herself in Hell in an attempt to save Alastair's life. She returned from hell balanced again, albeit scarred.
